Why volunteer?

Volunteering is when you give your free time, labour, skills and experience to support an organisation.

Arts and heritage organisations make great places to volunteer.  Filled with people who are passionate and dedicated, arts and heritage organisations are welcoming, friendly and really fascinating.  From historic sites to theatres and galleries to parks, the arts and heritage has a lot to offer, whatever your interests are!

There are many aspects to running an arts or heritage organisation, so we expect lots of different opportunities to be announced over the coming months.  Volunteer opportunities may include front of house duties, audience development skills or even governance of an organisation.  Opportunities might also be outside of a venue, supporting at events or maintaining historic parkland.  With so much versatility on offer, arts and heritage makes for a great volunteering choice!

There are many positive benefits to volunteering in arts and heritage organisations.

Here are a few:

  • Gaining new skills
  • Meeting new people and making friends
  • Developing social skills
  • Being part of something
  • Having a sense of purpose
  • Opening up job opportunities
  • Connecting you to your local community
  • Improving your self-esteem and confidence
  • Improving physical and mental wellbeing
  • Encouraging you to try something new
  • Having fun!

Whilst there are plenty of benefits to be enjoyed, we understand there are many things that might stop you from volunteering.

Examples include;

  • Not having enough free time
  • Childcare or caring responsibilities
  • Transport and travel issues
  • Poor health
  • Lack of skills
  • Lack of confidence
  • Language barriers

These are just few of the barriers that might prevent you from volunteering. There may be more, which are specific to you and your circumstances.

We’re on a mission to remove these barriers and support you into a volunteering role that works for you, whatever your circumstances.
