Looking for an opportunity in visitor experience? Enjoy meeting new people and sharing a love of history?
The Wordsworth Trust is looking for volunteers to warmly welcome visitors to Wordsworth Grasmere.
As a Visitor Experience Host you will help visitors to make the most of their visit to Wordsworth Grasmere by providing a friendly welcome to our public spaces and by sharing your knowledge and enthusiasm for Wordsworth Grasmere. You will answer questions and initiate conversations to ensure that visitors can find their way and are aware of what is on offer. You will seek feedback on the experience, encouraging visitors to complete surveys and make use of the various feedback stations and will help to manage visitor flow through the Welcome Space during busy periods.
You can be as involved as you want to be – other tasks can involve leading activities and tours in the Museum, or you can learn stories about key items in the collection and act as an additional support in the Museum Galleries and Dove Cottage.
Skills and qualities
You’ll need to be able to approach people and initiate conversations in a welcoming and friendly manner. It would be helpful too, if you are able, to discern whether visitors want to talk or to be left alone. You should have an interest in, and willingness to learn about, all that Wordsworth Grasmere has to offer. Although no previous knowledge is required, you will be expected to develop your understanding of the people, place and poetry associated with Wordsworth.
All training will be given as part of an induction to the role. You will receive training on:
- How to interact with visitors and how to deal with questions or issues that may arise.
- How to conduct visitor surveys and how to collect visitor feedback.
- Wordsworth Grasmere; the site layout, facilities and what’s happening each day.
- The collection, the people, and the poetry associated with Wordsworth Grasmere.
- Health & Safety relating to the role including how to assist in emergency evacuations.
You’ll also have a supervisor to support you with your tasks and daily activities and a volunteer coordinator to support your overall volunteering experience.
You’ll have the opportunity to meet and talk with a variety of people and have the satisfaction of knowing that you have helped to enhance the experience of visitors. It’s also a great way to share or advance your knowledge, especially if you’re interested in the history of the Lake District, Romanticism or Poetry. You’ll also be joining our volunteer community which is a great way to meet like-minded people.
Dates and availability
We’re pretty flexible and are just looking for 4 hours per week or per fortnight (10.00-2.00 or 11.00-3.00).
About the organisation
The Wordsworth Trust brings art and literature alive for tens of thousands of people every year. As well as Dove Cottage and the other historic buildings at Wordsworth Grasmere, they look after a unique collection of works by Wordsworth and the other writers and artists of the Romantic period. At the heart of this collection are the manuscripts that Wordsworth’s descendants gave to the Wordsworth Trust in 1935 so that they could remain here, where they were largely written and inspired.
Contact email@example.com or 07442 972 270 for more information about how we can personally support you in this role.
NB. There is a lift inside our Café, which is signposted from the Car Park, to take you up to the Museum and Ticket Desk. There is lift access to all floors of the Museum, including the Viewing Station. Most wheelchairs will find the ground floor of Dove Cottage accessible. As the Cottage is a historical Grade I listed building, the stairs to the first floor mean that unfortunately we are unable to provide wheelchair access to the upstairs rooms.
