Do you enjoy being outdoors? Meet new people and lead tours for an award-winning museum…
Senhouse Roman Museum is seeking friendly and engaging volunteers to lead tours around the site of the Roman fort adjacent to the museum.
Volunteer guides typically form a team of two people to lead the tours (one leading / speaking and one as back-up / support). The tours are offered to museum visitors and last for 30 – 45 minutes depending on the profile of the audience (e.g., adults, family, children). The guides do not have a strict script but are provided with essential information and are encouraged to develop their own tone that respond to the needs of the audience.
- Free admission to the museum
- 10% discount in the shop (books and gifts)
- Access to a pass to visit other museums in Cumbria free of charge
- Hot drinks are freely available to all volunteers whilst carrying out their volunteering role
Skills and qualities
This role would suit a team player, who is good with people and enjoys being outdoors. Some basic knowledge of the Romans and the Romans site at Maryport would be an advantage but not necessary as training will be provided.
Dates and availability
Tours take place April to October on Wednesdays and Sundays, 1.30 – 5pm. Volunteers are invited to pick their shifts. We can work flexibly with you to determine which hours/days are of interest. Volunteers are invited to a small number of training sessions during the winter months.
Please note that the museum does not usually cancel tours due to the weather unless it is particularly severe. Tour guides should be mindful of the weather and dress appropriately. There can be sheep and lambs present in the field.

Today, they welcome visitors to admire their significant collection, they host the Young Archaeologists Club, and they offer an exciting venue for school trips.
