About the role
Education Volunteers support Carlisle Castle’s popular Discovery Visits. From Roman beginnings to bloody medieval sieges, Carlisle Castle tells the story of England with its near-complete structure. As an Education Volunteer you will support groups of students as they become part of this history through the Captains, Captives and Costumes Discovery Visit. With hands-on engagement and fun-filled learning, this is a role as unique as the castle itself!
Where & When
- Carlisle Castle, Castle Way, Carlisle, CA3 8UR
- Starting September 2023, Discovery Visits take place on weekdays during term-time.
Working in pairs, you will assist the Captains, Captives and Costumes Discovery Visit. During
the session, students tour the castle investigating the clues and exploring different spaces
using their senses. The session culminates in the Warden’s Apartments, undertaking hands
on activities and using costumes to learn more about the people who lived and worked in the
You will support sessions by assisting schools as they explore the site and preparing
resources beforehand (including setting up and tidying away).
We are always trying to improve the education workshops, so evaluating the effectiveness of
the session is an important part of this role.
Who we’re looking for
We are looking for imaginative, fun individuals who would enjoy working with children and school groups. You should also be flexible and a good communicator.
