A fascinating role for someone with an interest in local history and archive collections
Ravenglass Railway Museum are looking for volunteers to assist with the ongoing collections management of their archive. The museum possesses a wealth of archive material (including photographs, plans and ephemera) which documents the history of the Ravenglass & Eskdale Railway. This is a great opportunity for somebody wanting to gain an understanding of archive collections and develop their cataloguing and digitising skills.
In this rewarding role you’ll help ensure that the museum’s archive is protected and made available for future generations. Volunteers will also be provided with a lunch token available for use in R&ER Turntable Café, as well as free travel on the Ravenglass and Eskdale Railway.
Skills & Qualities
This role would suit a team-player with a good attention to detail, who doesn’t mind seated/computer-based work. Full training will be provided.
Dates & Availability
This is a regular, 1 day-a-week volunteering opportunity. The museum is open daily from February half-term to October half-term and throughout winter when the Railway is running. A typical shift lasts from 4 to 7 hours. We can work flexibly with you to determine what days may be of interest to you.
About the organisation
Ravenglass Railway Museum tells the story of the Ravenglass & Eskdale Railway, affectionately known as the ‘Ratty’. Located at Ravenglass station on the Cumbrian coast, the museum houses a collection of artefacts ranging from steam locomotives and carriages right down to tickets, uniforms and models. Through exciting displays and hands-on interactive features, visitors can experience 150 years of the railway, the origins of the historic Roman port of Ravenglass and iron-ore mining in Eskdale.

NB. Part of the museum is accessed via an internal ramp. The museum’s archive is accessed via one flight of stairs.
